Chapter 3: Still Siler (Week 3)

And it came to pass in the third week of the second transfer I processed roosters!

For those of you unfamiliar with what it means to process roosters it's basically how you turn a rooster into chicken nuggets. If you don't want to know how it's done skip to the next paragraph. The process we did was a lot more humane than a factory. They just fully decapitate them. What we did is held them upside down to make them fall asleep, then while upside down in a cone thingy that holds them still we cut through the skin on the neck and cut the arteries and they bleed out. This is better because chickens are weird. Decapitation leaves them with a lot of blood and they are still kind of alive thus why they can run around for upwards of 20 minutes after decapitation. Draining them of blood fully kills them and they are calm almost they entire time. It was actually really surprising that the rooster was quiet the entire time! It just flinched a couple times as things were being cut. Then, after it's dead, you dunk it in hot water to loosen the feathers then cold water so the hot water doesn't cook the skin. Then defeathering and gutting. Going into I wasn't super comfortable but overall it was a really interesting and cool experience and it didn't bother me as much as I thought it would or really at all. I went home and ate chicken nuggets.

Thanksgiving was also this week! We did have a Thanksgiving dinner and we also got to hang out with our district for four hours in the morning! It was like a half Pday which was really nice. A lot of missions just moved Pday to Thanksgiving but we get a holiday and a Pday.

This week's spiritual thought starts with a song! "We got dust on our Bibles, brand new iPhones then wonder why we feel this way."¹ One thing that is becoming more prevalent is depression, anxiety, and many other forms of mental illness. There are also many factors that play into it but one of the biggest things is we are not focusing on the right things! "The joy we feel has little to do with the circumstances of our lives and everything to do with the focus of our lives."² If we focus on the world and worldly things we will have temporary worldly happiness. God offers lasting joy! We need focus on Godly things! This includes spending time with family, serving others, and especially bringing ourselves closer to God!

The best way to come closer to God is by reading the Book of Mormon.³ There are so many promised blessings for reading the Book of Mormon. This is, to me, the most powerful list of blessings given to those who read the Book of Mormon! "I feel certain that if, in our homes, parents will read from the Book of Mormon prayerfully and regularly, both by themselves and with their children, the spirit of that great book will come to permeate our homes and all who dwell therein. The spirit of reverence will increase; mutual respect and consideration for each other will grow. The spirit of contention will depart. Parents will counsel their children in greater love and wisdom. Children will be more responsive and submissive to the counsel of their parents. Righteousness will increase. Faith, hope, and charity—the pure love of Christ—will abound in our homes and lives, bringing in their wake peace, joy, and happiness."⁴

I testify that reading the Book of Mormon and understanding the doctrine it teaches will improve behavior!(5) It most certainly has helped me give up sins and resist temptations! And it does eventually bring noticeable peace and joy to all those who consistently read it. Just like working out and building muscle, I cannot tell you precisely when you will notice the difference in your life but I promise you that you will notice it if you sincerely study the Book of Mormon every day!

I love y'all all!
And thus ended the third week of the second transfer.

Picture time! Don't worry, there are no dead rooster pictures. I reserved those to gross out my mom specifically. The rest of y'all are safe. For now.

We invaded the Spanish Elders apartment and made a statue! And a few other pranks.

Church History Museum Visit

My mom and I made this collage for a scout requirement. My mom accidentally put the wrong year on the picture. These pictures are actually from our trip to Utah last December. It was 2015. For scouts I need to write about how this experience helped me feel reverent or helped me better understand my duty to God. It helped me feel reverent because it has historical and religious stuff and only historical and religious stuff. And modern day religious stuff. One example was a replica of the golden plates. We got to lift it to see how heavy they were. They said it was 50 pounds and it was REALLY heavy! Also, I got to see a video that had my Grandma Lynn in it. It was about the early members of the church who were trying to decide who the next prophet should be after Joseph Smith died. Several people had a really strong spiritual experience when Brigham Young began to talk to them and the Holy Ghost helped them know that Brigham Young should be their next prophet. We also went ...

First Week of Home School

On Monday we started home school, On Wednesday at home school I finished a really good book called The Best in the West . It is very interesting. There is an almost eight foot bear in the book! The other book I have read this week is The Tale of Peter Rabbit . It is on my Battle of the Books list. My favorite topic this week has been math. One of the things I learned in math is the hyphen. You don't use a hyphen in numbers one-twenty or in numbers ending in zero. (Because those are whole numbers.) But you do use a hyphen in numbers like twenty-one. I have finished lesson 51. I did all of those lessons plus several quizzes. We went on a walk and saw salmon. They are getting ready to lay eggs and die. They were flopping a lot and fighting over who gets to be in the exact spot where they were born. I got to shoot a BB gun for science. We learned about inertia. We were doing science by shooting the BB gun at a can to see...

A Story From When I was LIttle and Other Stuff

Recently I have been interested in hearing stories about when I was little. One of my favorite stories that Mom told me was about when Ammon and I were little and we would hog the bed. She said that I would come get in her bed over and over again. Dad would carry me back to my own bed, but I would always come back. She said that even though I was small, I would take up ALL the space. Somehow I could make my arms sprawl all over the queen sized bed so there was hardly any room left. When Ammon also tried to get into Mom and Dad's bed it was even worse. Sometimes Dad would just give up on having room and he would go sleep on the couch for the rest of the night. Right now I live in Craig, Alaska on Prince of Wales Island. All of my cousins are in Utah and all of my grandparents are also in Utah. I miss them and am going to visit them in just a few weeks for my baptism. I am inviting all of my cousins, grandmas and grandpas and maybe some of my uncles and one or two aunts. I already ...
