And it came to pass in the commencement of the third week of the first transfer there was a miracle!
On Friday last week I was inspired to knock a street but we didn't end up having time. Usually when that happens we just ignore it but I decided to put it on the next day. This continued until Monday night when we almost skipped it again but I decided we should skip a different street instead and go to the one I'd been trying to get to for a few days. We ended up finding an inactive member! He had been thinking about coming to church but didn't know where it was so we gave him the address. We gave him a Book of Mormon to give to his soon as well as a Libro de Mormon for him because he prefers Spanish. And yes Spanish is so common out here that even though we are teaching in English we have Libros in our car. We also gave the Spanish Elders his information so unfortunately we don't get to meet with him and help him rekindle his relationship with God.
As always service is fun. We do several different things for members and nonmembers. And as always the goat farm is my favorite. The owners aren't members but a few members work there.
It's been a pretty boring week. There's been more meetings than usual and none have been terrible but none have been amazing. It's been lots of driving. On two days we drove to the stake center which is about 90 minutes away. On Sunday our drive to church is 30 minutes each way.
Our stake center is right next to the temple and it was cool to see the temple. It's closed right now though. It's so so small! I thought the Taylorsville temple was small but the Raleigh temple is way smaller. I think it's smaller than the stake center next door! Also, the Raleigh temple isn't in Raleigh; it's in Apex.
It's always good to get emails from any and all of y'all! I love hearing from people and seeing how all y'all are doing!
The Book of Mormon is really powerful! I encourage everyone to read it and the first time through just read it. Get familiar with the stories and the love, power, and mercy of God throughout it. After the first time start highlighting specific things. For example, the doctrine of Christ which is faith, repentance, baptism, receiving the Holy Ghost, and enduring to the end. Also if you need to you can skip the Isaiah chapters because Isaiah is really confusing and it's better to skip Isaiah than to not read anything at all. I'm pretty sure President Holland said that at some point but I can't find it.
Some verses that stuck out to me this week are Jacob 5:21-22
"And it came to pass that the servant said unto his master: How comest thou hither to plant this tree, or this branch of the tree? For behold, it was the poorest spot in all the land of thy vineyard. And the Lord of the vineyard said unto him: Counsel me not; I knew that it was a poor spot of ground; wherefore, I said unto thee, I have nourished it this long time, and thou beholdest that it hath brought forth much fruit."
This is an allegory that can be interpreted a few different ways that but the way I read it this time is it's about us. The Lord puts us in hard spots sometimes because he knows we can handle it and overcome it and thrive and "bring forth much fruit." Later in the chapter it also talks about how some were planted in easier and harder places to grow. The Lord is always very aware of where he puts us and very involved in our lives.
I love y'all!
And thus ended the third week of Elder Shadel's first transfer.
Picture time for mom!
We ran unknowingly knocked on the door of one of the Spanish Elder's friends
