Chapter 1: The MTC

And it came to pass in the first week of the MTC...

I wasn't sure I'd have much to talk about because I'm not yet out in the field doing much. Boy was I wrong! Turns out about 40 hours of video calls across 4 days (including today, which is P-day) gives you something to talk about, even if most of the meetings are boring. Leading up to my mission I wasn't too excited to leave everything and everyone behind. While I will still miss everything, I know now more than ever this is where I am supposed to be.

One of the coolest things about the MTC is how much they trust us immediately. On just the first couple days we plan our own personal studies, companion studies, help others appointment (basically giving practice lessons to actors), an interview with a convert we know (Thanks grandma and grandpa!), and a district devotional with no teachers present! They trust us to schedule and execute these timely and appropriately without looking over our shoulders, sitting in on our meeting in the background to make sure we're doing it right, or anything else of that nature. One of the lessons they stressed most is that we will be blessed for using our agency to choose God and to do what we should, and they give us so many opportunities to do that!

My companion and I are very similar in personality and I can't wait to get to Provo to be with him and my district. Meeting my district has been amazing and I am so excited to go meet them in Provo instead of zoom! They are so chill and they don't get the chats locked down in any of the big zoom meetings with over 750 participants. My district has so much faith and the spirit during our devotional was incredible! We watched a prerecorded devotional from Elder and Sister Christofferson, then we talked about it for half an hour. This story stood out most. It's Elder Christofferson quoting President Faust, Quoting President Hinkley so you know it's good. I love this story because it is a really powerful analogy for what Christ did for us, and when we have a try understanding of what He did we will respond like Little Jim. We should tell our Savior "I will love you till I die for taking my licking for me! Yes, I will love you forever!”

I love you all so much!
Sincerely,
Elder Shadel

Church History Museum Visit

My mom and I made this collage for a scout requirement. My mom accidentally put the wrong year on the picture. These pictures are actually from our trip to Utah last December. It was 2015. For scouts I need to write about how this experience helped me feel reverent or helped me better understand my duty to God. It helped me feel reverent because it has historical and religious stuff and only historical and religious stuff. And modern day religious stuff. One example was a replica of the golden plates. We got to lift it to see how heavy they were. They said it was 50 pounds and it was REALLY heavy! Also, I got to see a video that had my Grandma Lynn in it. It was about the early members of the church who were trying to decide who the next prophet should be after Joseph Smith died. Several people had a really strong spiritual experience when Brigham Young began to talk to them and the Holy Ghost helped them know that Brigham Young should be their next prophet. We also went ...

First Week of Home School

On Monday we started home school, On Wednesday at home school I finished a really good book called The Best in the West . It is very interesting. There is an almost eight foot bear in the book! The other book I have read this week is The Tale of Peter Rabbit . It is on my Battle of the Books list. My favorite topic this week has been math. One of the things I learned in math is the hyphen. You don't use a hyphen in numbers one-twenty or in numbers ending in zero. (Because those are whole numbers.) But you do use a hyphen in numbers like twenty-one. I have finished lesson 51. I did all of those lessons plus several quizzes. We went on a walk and saw salmon. They are getting ready to lay eggs and die. They were flopping a lot and fighting over who gets to be in the exact spot where they were born. I got to shoot a BB gun for science. We learned about inertia. We were doing science by shooting the BB gun at a can to see...

A Story From When I was LIttle and Other Stuff

Recently I have been interested in hearing stories about when I was little. One of my favorite stories that Mom told me was about when Ammon and I were little and we would hog the bed. She said that I would come get in her bed over and over again. Dad would carry me back to my own bed, but I would always come back. She said that even though I was small, I would take up ALL the space. Somehow I could make my arms sprawl all over the queen sized bed so there was hardly any room left. When Ammon also tried to get into Mom and Dad's bed it was even worse. Sometimes Dad would just give up on having room and he would go sleep on the couch for the rest of the night. Right now I live in Craig, Alaska on Prince of Wales Island. All of my cousins are in Utah and all of my grandparents are also in Utah. I miss them and am going to visit them in just a few weeks for my baptism. I am inviting all of my cousins, grandmas and grandpas and maybe some of my uncles and one or two aunts. I already ...
