Chapter 1: The MTC (week 2)

And it came to pass in the second week of the MTC...

Once again going into this week I didn't think I would have anything to write about because we had almost no meetings, but once again I was wrong. But only because today has been chaotic in a sense. Leading up to the MTC was pretty chill. Saying goodbyes, packing, nothing too exciting.

Yesterday was fun. I got to play spot it with my parents, Lisha, and Braxton for about half an hour before I left. Then it was just driving, saying goodbye to my parents, getting a phone, keycard and other things, and unpacking a little bit. Then we had a really good devotional about the Character of Christ. The big thing is that when we have problems in our lives the natural man in us wants others to feel sorry for us and serve us. We turn inward. Christ did the opposite. Even after fasting 40 days and being tempted by Satan 3 times he sent angels to minister to John, not him. In John 4:11 it reads that the angels came to Christ, but the Joseph Smith translation is that he sent angels to John because he knew John was in prison. Christ turns outwards. When He struggled He looked to serve others, not have others serve Him. The devotional was really good, dinner was really good, overall yesterday was really good.

However, today has fallen apart from the beginning, which has been fun but also a lot of changing and walking. Elder Whyte and I went to breakfast dressed in missionary attire, like we are supposed to, and invited the rest of our district to come. No one came. They all spread out throughout the cafeteria instead. Then we went back to our not dorm. Quick aside, at the MTC they are not college dorms because this is a different environment. They told us to call them living quarters but they made such a big point about us not calling them dorms that we started calling them "not dorms." Anyway, we went back to our not dorm and changed for service, then found out our district wasn't actually assigned a service project. So then we went back and changed into missionary attire for our HOA (help others appointment, basically giving a lesson to an actor) and that actually went pretty well. Then we went back to the not dorm and changed into exercise clothes and tried to go to the gym. Turns out the gym is closed for construction but they forgot to close the sign ups for it. So then, once again, we went back to the not dorm and changed into missionary attire because you really can't do anything here unless you are in missionary attire. For example, using the computer lab like I am right now. Or practicing an instrument. Also going to the cafeteria. If you want food in Pday clothes you have to get a sack lunch.

One thing today that was kinda funny is on the way back from the gym I saw Elder Miles and got a picture with him. If you know you know. If you want to know, let me know. Maybe I'll tell you the Elder Miles lore next week. I feel kinda bad because he became a celebrity and I'm not sure he wanted that but I told him he absolutely didn't have to get a picture with me if he didn't want to but he said it was fine. Also I'm adding a picture of me with Elder Whyte, my companion. I'm gonna take that right now in the computer lab so I can send this email.

Still Love y'all,
Elder Shadel

Church History Museum Visit

My mom and I made this collage for a scout requirement. My mom accidentally put the wrong year on the picture. These pictures are actually from our trip to Utah last December. It was 2015. For scouts I need to write about how this experience helped me feel reverent or helped me better understand my duty to God. It helped me feel reverent because it has historical and religious stuff and only historical and religious stuff. And modern day religious stuff. One example was a replica of the golden plates. We got to lift it to see how heavy they were. They said it was 50 pounds and it was REALLY heavy! Also, I got to see a video that had my Grandma Lynn in it. It was about the early members of the church who were trying to decide who the next prophet should be after Joseph Smith died. Several people had a really strong spiritual experience when Brigham Young began to talk to them and the Holy Ghost helped them know that Brigham Young should be their next prophet. We also went ...

First Week of Home School

On Monday we started home school, On Wednesday at home school I finished a really good book called The Best in the West . It is very interesting. There is an almost eight foot bear in the book! The other book I have read this week is The Tale of Peter Rabbit . It is on my Battle of the Books list. My favorite topic this week has been math. One of the things I learned in math is the hyphen. You don't use a hyphen in numbers one-twenty or in numbers ending in zero. (Because those are whole numbers.) But you do use a hyphen in numbers like twenty-one. I have finished lesson 51. I did all of those lessons plus several quizzes. We went on a walk and saw salmon. They are getting ready to lay eggs and die. They were flopping a lot and fighting over who gets to be in the exact spot where they were born. I got to shoot a BB gun for science. We learned about inertia. We were doing science by shooting the BB gun at a can to see...

A Story From When I was LIttle and Other Stuff

Recently I have been interested in hearing stories about when I was little. One of my favorite stories that Mom told me was about when Ammon and I were little and we would hog the bed. She said that I would come get in her bed over and over again. Dad would carry me back to my own bed, but I would always come back. She said that even though I was small, I would take up ALL the space. Somehow I could make my arms sprawl all over the queen sized bed so there was hardly any room left. When Ammon also tried to get into Mom and Dad's bed it was even worse. Sometimes Dad would just give up on having room and he would go sleep on the couch for the rest of the night. Right now I live in Craig, Alaska on Prince of Wales Island. All of my cousins are in Utah and all of my grandparents are also in Utah. I miss them and am going to visit them in just a few weeks for my baptism. I am inviting all of my cousins, grandmas and grandpas and maybe some of my uncles and one or two aunts. I already ...
